Datamade

DataMade works as a data and web consultancy for civic society, helping governments, nonprofits, researchers, and journalists capture, organize, understand, and share data. The firm frames its work around supporting partners engaged in democracy, justice, and equity, rather than treating those as marketing labels layered onto standard consulting deliverables.

Services span data engineering pipelines, custom software development, web development, UX research, information architecture, and data warehousing, alongside strategic consulting, data wrangling, and information design. Derek Eder, founder and partner, leads the practice alongside partner Hannah Cushman Garland and partner emeritus Forest Gregg, with a development team that includes lead developer Monkruman St. Jules and developers Xavier Medrano, Hayley Owens, and Lily Ye handling the technical build-out of these projects.

Past work includes the Preserving Naturally Occurring Affordable Housing project, done with The Preservation Compact and DePaul Institute for Housing Studies, and the Illinois Wastewater Surveillance System, built in partnership with the Discovery Partners Institute and Illinois Department of Public Health. DataMade also built Chi Block Builder with the City of Chicago's Department of Planning and Development, and Los Angeles Metro Board Agendas with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Chicago's Million Dollar Blocks was produced pro bono. Across these engagements, the pattern is consistent: public-sector and civic partners bring complex, often siloed data, and DataMade turns it into usable pipelines, searchable tools, and public-facing sites.
