Revamping the connection of home service providers and their clients

2.Background
Ovvy is considered a digital Word-of-Mouth marketplace for home services. It provides a platform where home service providers can showcase their expertise, offerings, and fee charges. Meanwhile, homeowners can see individual providers’ profiles, ratings, and reviews before deciding which one to choose. The app offers both parties efficiency and transparency and helps them get the best deal.

After delivering the first release, GEM carried on with the app maintenance and executed several major updates.
In the beginning, the apps offered six main categories of services in the domestic sector. To expand its offerings and give users more optimized experiences, the updated version was required to have dynamic content so that admins could customize the services in each category.

Besides, the payment system also needed revamping. The existing payment gateway did not meet the users’ expectations due to slow response times and a high rate of errors. Therefore, the client decided to switch to another online payment solution with better stability and more diverse features.

3. Challenges
With the two change requirements, the GEM team faced several challenges. We had to ensure that the existing database was unharmed and compatible with the new system migration. It posed quite a difficulty as the database was huge and complex.

In terms of the new payment gateway, there should be no disruption caused to customers’ transactions during the transition and migration. Also, we needed to avoid any possible downtime for the app.

4. Solutions
The GEM team created a testing environment for the updated version and tried out the new features and gateway before launch to address those challenges. The alternative payment solution was tested thoroughly before being deployed on the live app. We managed to make the change during a slow traffic period, just in case we ran into any unforeseen bugs.

We also employed a multi-level systems design approach and found the best possible solution to scale in the long term easily, which prepared it to follow changes in the number of users and market offers quickly.

5. Impacts
The new features were successfully updated and went live smoothly as expected. Ovvy app now gets an average of 3,000 downloads per month, with 50% of users creating profiles.

Overall, the client was delighted with the delivered solution, which has worked steadily and impeccably. The best proof of a job well done was the client’s satisfaction and recommendation of GEM’s services to their business contacts.

Infrastructure and database reconstruction for a sports technology company

4. Background
The client is a large company in the Sports and Entertainment industry. They provide marketing services and sports data analytics derived from ten satellite websites. To do so, they have acquired a web analytics service that helps them collect and monitor such databases.

5. Challenges
During the project, the GEM team had to resolve two big challenges.

Firstly, the client’s previous infrastructure could not handle a large and growing amount of traffic. As a result, traffic spikes when more users are accessing, and the website’s events increase dramatically by 2-3 times (over 1 million events), causing the server to crash.

Secondly, the client’s current system uses a database unfamiliar to GEM’s developers, with very limited research and training materials.

6. Solutions
To resolve the first problem, the GEM team reconstructed the infrastructure on the AWS platform. Based on the auto-scale mechanism, the infrastructure was expanded to a larger space with a higher capacity for downloading.

More importantly, we ensure scale automation works effectively within the client’s budget. Regarding the second difficulty, it took more time and effort for the team to explore a brand-new database. After researching materials, we implemented and ran the demo until the outcomes were ready for the client.

7. Results
We built an infrastructure sufficient for operating the system smoothly. Hence, the server will not crash when onboarding a new website.

Besides, their database was upgraded to a larger space and higher capacity, which enables the collection and storage of millions of events.

The project was successfully delivered and afterward, GEM continues to offer support in terms of maintenance and optimization.

The client is a South Korean start-up. Their main product is a virtual marketplace that connects interested buyers and sellers, helping them trade mechanical spare parts.
The solution must act as a dynamic and informative platform that presents buyer requests (shape, size, quantity) while simultaneously allowing sellers and manufacturers to look for potential customers and make biddings.

4. Challenge
The first challenge is building a scalable solution to host a growing number of users and future added features.
The second challenge lies in maintaining effective and frictionless communication between the vendor and the client, especially the latter’s back-end team.
This is the first time our client has worked with an outsourced vendor, hence both sides encountered a lot of challenges in communication and, especially, project management.

5. Solution
We established a team of 2 app developers, 2 web developers, and 2 QC engineers to develop solutions for the two platforms simultaneously.
In terms of communication issues, we openly discussed with our clients to find a solution. Our PM offered consultancy and continuous support relating to project management.
We advised our clients on effective management strategies, such as logging requirements and communicating.
